Lessons Overview - music solutions

Styles

The lesson plans cover various styles of music ranging from country to rock.  Often drummers can unfairly gain reputations of having little or no musical knowledge but by studying several styles a pupil can become more musically competent and aware.  This will increase confidence to play in appropriate musical situations while growing their reputation as a versatile player.

Technique

Technique is important to any drummer from beginners to the more advanced. A good technique can allow the drummer to take an idea and express and apply it successfully to the drum kit. Technique is there to help gain power, speed, control, fluency and accuracy. Most drummers want to achieve all of these, but many go about it the wrong way and end up injuring themselves which in some cases can stop them drumming for the rest of their lives. The aim of technique classes is to give new pupils the best possible start by creating a comfortable, natural drumming action. For the more experienced drummer it is an opportunity to banish any bad habits or to gain some helpful tips to improve technique. A correct technique will allow many years of unstrained injury free drumming.

Reading

The Drumming Solutions team consider drum music reading and notation to be the most powerful way to communicate drumming concepts. Reading is an essential skill for any working drummer as sometimes there is little or no time to learn a piece of music.  Lessons will be based around reading.  Confident readers become better drummers.

Grades

If a pupil would like to cover grades from any of the major exam boards the Drumming Solutions team are confident of helping them achieve their goals.  Grades are a wonderful incentive for any drummer from the beginner to the more advanced.  Major examination grades also have the benefit of counting towards educational qualifications from GCSE through to A Level.  Grades above level five also count towards University UCAS points. During grading exams, pupils are required to play along to CD’s that have been supplied and written by the appropriate exam board whilst following the correct drum chart. Pupils will also have to play through technical exercises, sight read, improvise, read music and answer musical knowledge questions.  These exams are nationally recognised.

Overview

Although the listings above are the main objectives of drum teaching, the Drumming Solutions team will cover all aspects of drumming including independence, grooves, time signatures, tone, tuning and many other characteristics. We will also cover underestimated but yet important issues of drumming including what to carry in a stick bag and the correct way to get the best out of your practice time.
